Assyria Liberation Party 30th Anniversary Statement

Our Struggle for an Independent Assyria Continues

Today, we proudly and resolutely celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Assyria Liberation Party. Our struggle over the past thirty years stands as a clear expression of our people’s determination to defend their historical rights, cultural heritage, and political will.

Our party was founded three decades ago with the aim of advocating for the right of the Assyrian people—an ancient people of Mesopotamia—to self-determination. We were the first party to support and advance the strategy of Freidon Aturaya and Agha Petros. When we set out on this path, certain political circles within our community ridiculed us. Some said, “Where is a free, independent Assyria, and where are you?”

Until 1995 the Assyrian people lacked a clear political demand for independence and freedom. That was a major shortcoming. But today we witness young children holding banners that read “Free Assyria.” This is not only an honorable development for us but also a reminder of the immense responsibility we carry.

Everyone should know this: in these thirty years of struggle perhaps we have not achieved all of our goals but we have never given up our free will and we have never made concessions. The struggle we are waging is not just a fight for the existence of one people—it is a universal effort for peace, justice and freedom.

Throughout history, the Assyrian people have faced countless forms of oppression, displacement and assimilation policies. Yet no force has been able to extinguish our people’s ideal of freedom. Today, more determined than ever, we once again affirm our goal of establishing an independent, democratic and secular Assyrian state.

Our struggle will continue to build a future based on equality and human rights on our historical lands. We call on the international community to hear the legitimate demands of our people and to support our just cause.

On this meaningful day, we respectfully and gratefully commemorate all our heroes who lost their lives in our struggle, and we pledge once again to honor their legacy.

Long live the Assyrian people!

Long live independent Assyria!
